How to Make Dog Clothes?

Does your dog wear clothes? Dog clothing is proven to be not only necessary during the bitter winter, but also useful for making dogs look prettier. Many people buy their dogs clothes, but some do have time and patience to make themselves. Making dog clothes should be fun, and it is rewarding when you see how cute your dog looks in the clothes you make.

Then how to make your dog beautiful and fit dog clothes?

First, measure the girth of your dog (around the rib cage at the widest part) and the length of your dog from neck to the base of the tail. These two measurements will help you fit your dog with most clothes.

Then, you should make some preparation for cutting and sewing. When making dog clothes, use good quality thread and double stitch seams. Depending on the dog, they can be quite hard on their items and the double stitching can help. If you're pretty good with a sewing machine, you can do this craft with no problem.

Get an idea in mind of what  type of dog clothes you want to make. If you want to make a dog coat, for example, choose the proper fabric and begin making your pattern. Any fabric that looks good and give comfortable touch for your dog should work.

Now, you should begin to make the patterns. Draw half of the back measurements onto the paper, and mark the pattern so that the middle of the back should be on the fold of the fabric. Draw the neckline onto the back pattern piece by measuring around the neck, then drawing a fourth of this figure onto the paper.  Draw the approximate measurement for the "shoulder" of the dog, to connect between the front leg holes and the neckline. Measure how far down the clothes will need to be, and how big it will have to be around the tummy. For the front piece, draw the measurement of a fourth of the neckline, the slanted "shoulder" measurement. The back length measurement should be drawn onto the pattern, but only a fourth of the tummy measurement.

What's next? Yes, cutting. But before cutting the fabric, you should lay the pattern pieces, right side together on a table top. Make sure your seams will line up and make adjustments now. If the back shoulder measurement is a little longer than the front, shave a little off of the back neckline. After making sure the front and the back pieces align, make adjustments like rounding corners. If you plan to put sleeves in, measure from the "ankle" to the top shoulder, then from the ankle to underneath the front leg. Draw half of these measurements and cut two arm pieces, each on the fold.

After cutting the fabric from the pattern pieces, sew together. You should start from the shoulder seams. Sew both shoulder seams straight across, then sew both side seams. Sew around the leg hole, then attach other leg piece. Sew around the leg hole, then attach other leg piece. You can put on a button, snaps, or leave the coat open. You can add lace, or other decorations on the clothes.
