The most important factor you have to consider before selecting a dog bed is your dog's size. The bed must be big enough and strong enough to match your dog breed. So carefully measure your dog standing up, from tip of nose to base of tail and also from floor to shoulders or head.
If you want to buy a mat dog bed, add 10-12 inches, or measure your dog another time when his length is fully stretched out. For nest beds, measure your dog's length when he is curled up. Measure from the top of his head to the point where his tail meets his hindquarters, and then add 7-9 inches. You should consider some room for growth.
